Local AM is marking tourism week by visiting Hafod Copper works in
their Swansea East Constituency
The Assembly Member wanted to use Tourism Week to
thank the tourism industry and people of Swansea East for their part in making
Wales such a world-class visitor destination that attracts more than 10 million
visitors each year.
The Hafod Copper works represents the best of
Swansea’s Industrial past; in 1825 10,000 of the City’s 16000 population were
employed either directly in the copper industry or one of its support
industries such as shipping. The works closed in 1980 and for years was
derelict; recently however, a regeneration project in conjunction with Swansea
University has seen restoration to many of the 12 buildings and structures
remaining on the site.
Mike Hedges AM said… ‘if you have not visited the
site, I urge you to – it is a wonderful opportunity to look at Swansea’s past,
and see how previous generations lived and worked.’
Each year, Wales welcomes more than 10 million
overnight visitors – that’s well over three visitors per head of population.
The Wales Visitor Survey consistently shows that the feeling of welcome and the
feeling of security, along with the quality of the natural environment, are
among the highest-rated aspects of visits to Wales.
Mike Hedges AM said: “Tourism is crucial to
the Welsh economy and the fantastic welcome Welsh people offer means tourists
are always keen to return”
“This is of course the case in Swansea East where
we are famous for our warm welcome and beautiful scenery.”
The Hafod Copper works is one of my favourite
places, so where better to visit on tourism week”
